Selling Toys & Games on Amazon USA

Amazon is the largest single channel for toy and game sales in the US, accounting for roughly one-third of all US toy purchases. For international brands, it offers far lower barriers to market entry than physical retail — but the Toys & Games category has unique compliance requirements, aggressive Q4 competition, and listing quality standards that are more demanding than most other categories. Getting these right from launch is critical, because negative reviews from safety-related returns in the first weeks can permanently damage ASIN performance.

Toys & Games category: gating and approval

Amazon's Toys & Games category has seasonal gating during Q4 (October 15 – January 3) under Amazon's 'Holiday Selling Guidelines for Toys & Games.' To qualify for unrestricted selling during Q4, you must meet Amazon's sales history and performance requirements (established by October 15). New sellers who have not met these requirements are blocked from listing new toy ASINs during the peak holiday season.

To qualify for Q4 unrestricted selling: be an established seller with a full year of sales history, maintain a low order defect rate (<1%), low late shipment rate (<4%), and have processed your first sale before a specified date. For new brands, this means launching your toy ASINs before October 15 — ideally by August — to build sufficient sales history for unrestricted Q4 access.

CPSIA compliance for Amazon listings

Amazon requires that all children's products comply with CPSIA and applicable ASTM standards. While Amazon does not always proactively request CPC documentation at listing creation, it actively solicits compliance documentation via 'Product Compliance Requests' — especially for high-velocity children's product ASINs. Failure to provide documentation within Amazon's requested timeframe results in ASIN suppression.

Best practice: upload your Children's Product Certificate and underlying test reports to your Amazon Brand Registry compliance library before listing. Amazon's 'Manage Your Compliance' dashboard allows proactive document submission. For ASINs with high sales velocity, proactive submission reduces the risk of surprise suppression during peak selling periods.

Age grading on Amazon listings

Amazon requires accurate age-grading on all toy listings — this data populates the 'Recommended Age' filter on Amazon and determines which shopping programs your ASIN appears in. Age-grading must be consistent with your CPC and ASTM F963 safety testing. Listing a product with an incorrect age grade (e.g., listing a product with small parts as suitable for age 2+) violates Amazon's policies and triggers listing removal.

CPSC warning language for choking hazards must appear in listing copy if applicable: if your product has small parts and is age-graded for 3+, include the mandatory choking hazard warning in your product description or bullet points. Amazon will sometimes add this language automatically based on age-grade metadata, but confirming it appears prevents compliance inquiries.

FBA for toys: Q4 inventory management

Toys is one of the highest-seasonality categories on Amazon — a significant proportion of annual toy sales occur in Q4 (October–December). FBA inventory planning for toys must account for: (1) Amazon's FBA inventory cutoff for holiday — to guarantee pre-Christmas delivery, FBA inventory must arrive at fulfillment centers by mid-November. (2) Q4 storage fee surcharges — Amazon charges significantly higher storage fees October–December. (3) Post-holiday returns — January returns for toys are high; budget for return processing costs and inventory condition assessment.

For toys, use the FBA Inventory Placement Service to control which FC receives your inventory — split shipments to multiple FCs increase cross-country shipping time risk during Q4. Send 80% of holiday inventory to FBA by mid-October, with a 20% buffer for rapid replenishment if sell-through exceeds forecast.

Listing optimization for toys and games

(1) Title: Brand + product name + age range + key feature + number of pieces/players if applicable. (2) Main image: Product on white background. Secondary images should include lifestyle shots of children playing (model releases required), scale reference, and all included components laid out. (3) Bullets: Lead with age suitability and key play benefit. Include educational claims (STEAM, creative play, fine motor skills) where accurate. Safety certifications (ASTM F963, CPSIA compliant). Component count and materials. (4) A+ Content: For tabletop games, include how-to-play overview and game setup images. For construction or STEM toys, include completed examples and complexity indicators. (5) Video: Highly effective for games and construction toys — show gameplay or build process in 30–60 seconds.
